There have been a lot of grey days recently. I've tended to wait for sunny days for taking my blog photos because the photos come out well that way with plenty of colour and contrast, but I decided to go out and take pictures this morning even though it was overcast. On grey days all that sunshine that has been helping to form the blossoms shines straight back out of each flower. I came back with all sorts of bright flower pictures for my collection.
The one I'm showing you today is of Hypericum and Valerian, I think, (click on the photo to enlarge) , reaching up by a grey wooden fence, cheery and subtle.
On my walk I was thinking about times at work and at home when there isn't much inspiration or energy coming in like sunshine from the outside. What then?
Perhaps that's the time to look around at what you have already achieved in your life that is bringing good results. OK you are going after bigger, better, different or whatever, but amongst the ordinary substance of daily life what is there that is positive already? A photo that you haven't really noticed lately that's of someone you care about? A testimonial someone wrote for you that could boost your self esteem? What's the equivalent for you of looking around about with a camera and finding a few ordinary flowers brightening things up?
Something I remember the coach Michael Neill (see 'Feel Happy Now' on my bookcase) saying when I heard him speak in London recently, as one of a list of antidotes to depression, was 'Have an average day.'. That's good isn't it? Not every day has to be stupendously amazingly better than every other day or even moderately elating. There's goodness and beauty in the ordinary and average.
I could have stomped past those flowers by the fence, but instead noticed them and made a connection. Just noticing the detail of life can be enough. Then average and can be quite wonderful really, can't it? Grey can be a good backdrop to colour.
